How To Know If You Will Be Overweight In The Future   by Craig Clemmings

In this article we will touch on whether you are destined to be overweight or if you have a choice. This comes down to if you have a genetic predisposition to being overweight, the habits you have now that will affect your weight later in life and what you can do about your genetic disadvantages and current eating habits.

The most fundamental reason that people gain weight is eating in excess and not exercising. Other factors that come into play as well are your metabolism, environment and your genes. Those 3 factors determine how efficiently your body uses the food you eat. Genes are one example of how weight can be out of your complete control, but that doesn’t mean there is nothing you can do to combat being overweight.

Below you will find a list of some of the things that can tell you if you are predisposed to gaining weight and being overweight later in life:

- If you were overweight as a child
- If your parents are overweight
- If you exercise very little and hate exerting yourself
- If you eat a lot of fast food
- If you are taking anti-depressants or steroids.

If you have any of the above things in common than you may have issues with your weight now or later down the road. We’ll now take a closer look at some of the above factors in greater detail.

If you were an overweight child then it usually translates to being overweight as an adult. Studies and research shows many patterns that being overweight as a child has an affect on your weight in adolesence. It has been shown that nearly 80 percent of children that were obese during the ages of 10-13 stay that way as adults. Women have it harder in this area compared to men.

The favors are not in your odds if you were born to obese parents. Nearly 80 percent of kids that have 2 obese parents become obese as well. Only 14 percent of average weight parents give birth to kids that become overweight later in life. If you fit the first category you may feel like there is nothing you can do but there is because while genetics are very important, lifestyle and habits also play a big part. If your family is active and has good eating habits then you are less likely to become obese yourself.

It may seem like common sense that if you don’t exercise you will gain weight. Studies show that just under 40 percent of obese people engage in no physical activites at all, proving this. The amount of calories you can burn by just doing a little bit of exercise such as a walk after dinner consistently can really help keep weight off. If you just sit around all day and do little physical activity you can gain weight on as few as 1800 calories a day.

Fast food is a very easy way to get food but an even easier way to gain fat fast. Fast food restaurants have begun to offer lower calorie food but it is not everyone’s first choice when they go to get fast food. The average calorie count in a fast food meal is 1200 calories which is far over what we should take in on one meal. The other hidden part of fast food is that you often eat it very fast. This has been discovered to lead to gaining weight whereas spreading your meal over an hour helps better digest your food and process it better.
